After evaluating various alternatives, Ocean County is advancing the design of a grade separation of Whiting-New Egypt Road (County Route 539) over Ridge Way to improve safety, reduce travel delays, and improve Joint Base operations.
Project Description
The project is located along the section of Whiting-New Egypt Road (County Route 539) within the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in the Townships of Plumsted and Jackson in Ocean County, NJ.
Roadway Characteristics:
Classification: Rural Major Collector
Roadway Width: 30-34 feet with 12 ft lanes in each direction
Speed Limit: 55 MPH
To improve conditions along this roadway and operations on the Joint Base, the following alternatives were considered as part of the concept development phase:
- Alternative 1: No-Build
- Alternative 2: Elevating CR-539 over Ridge Way
- Alternative 3: Elevating Ridge Way over CR-539
- Alternative 4: Installation of Signalized Intersection along CR-539
A matrix was used to compare each of the alternatives against various criteria and Alternative 2 was selected as the Preliminary Preferred Alternative, which will be advanced through the preliminary and final engineering phases.
